Privacy Policy

01Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to the AskBetter browser extension (the "Extension") and, where noted in section 08, to the AskBetter website at askbetter.piyushdoorwar.com (the "Website"). By installing or using AskBetter, you agree to this policy.

02Data Collection

AskBetter does not collect, store, sell, or transmit personal data to the developer. The Extension does not require accounts, logins, or identity information.

No developer analytics. No hidden telemetry.

03Local Data Storage

AskBetter stores the following locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local. None of it is sent to the developer.

• Settings: provider, model, presets, custom presets, custom prompt additions, toggles, and the Optimize button's position on each site.
• API keys: your Gemini, OpenAI, and/or Anthropic keys.
• Prompt history: the text of your most recent 100 rewrites (the original and the result, each up to 4,000 characters), including text you rephrased on other websites with Phrase Better and Refine results. Shown in the History view and kept until you clear it.
• Usage log: one entry per successful request with its time, provider, model, mode, token counts, and an estimated cost. It contains no prompt text, powers the Reports view, and is pruned to the last 30 days.
• Model list cache: the models each provider offers, refreshed at most once a day.

Deleting your data: History → Clear history removes saved prompts. Models → API key → Clear stored key & data removes everything listed above. Uninstalling the Extension also removes all of it.

04Prompts, Page Content, and Processing

AskBetter reads prompt text from the ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini input boxes only when you press Optimize (or its keyboard shortcut), and reads text you select on any web page only when you choose "Re-phrase with AskBetter" from the right-click menu.

The following is sent directly from your browser to the AI provider you selected, using your own API key:

• Optimize, Regenerate, and Refine: your prompt (for Refine, also the current rewrite and the change you asked for), the preset instructions, and any custom prompt additions.
• Phrase Better: the text you selected and your Phrase Better settings.
• Key verification and model list: your API key, to call the provider's list-models endpoint when you verify a key and when the model list refreshes (at most once a day).

AskBetter does not route any of this through a developer-controlled server.

The developer does not access, store, or monitor your prompts, page selections, or AI outputs.

05API Keys and Credentials

API keys you enter are stored only in chrome.storage.local on your device. They are read only by the Extension's own settings page and background service worker; the scripts AskBetter runs on ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini never read them, and web pages cannot access them. Keys are sent only to the provider they belong to. The developer never receives your keys.

You are responsible for managing and rotating your keys safely with the relevant provider.

06Third-Party Services

Third-party AI providers (Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic) are optional and user-configured. What they do with the text you send, including any retention or use for training, is governed by their own privacy policies and the terms of your API account. The developer is not responsible for third-party data practices.

Requests to OpenAI ask it not to store the response for later retrieval (store: false). Requests to Anthropic are made directly from your browser.

Connecting an external provider means your prompt is sent to that provider's servers.

07Permissions

AskBetter requests these browser permissions strictly to enable core features:

• storage — saves your settings, API keys, prompt history, and usage log locally.
• Content scripts on ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini — add the Optimize button to those sites' prompt boxes and write the rewrite you accept back into them. They run whenever you open those sites, but read the prompt only when you press Optimize.
• activeTab / scripting — after you choose "Re-phrase with AskBetter" on any page, read the selected text and show the suggestions there so you can apply one.
• contextMenus — adds the "Re-phrase with AskBetter" right-click action.
• Host permissions for the Gemini, OpenAI, and Anthropic APIs — let the Extension call those providers directly to rewrite text, verify keys, and list models.

No permissions are used for tracking or advertising.

08Analytics and Tracking

The Extension: AskBetter does not use analytics or tracking tools and does not profile users. No usage events, crash reports, or interaction data are sent anywhere. The local usage log described in section 03 is computed and stored only on your device and is never transmitted.

The Website: askbetter.piyushdoorwar.com uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page visits in aggregate (for example, pages viewed and referring sites). Cloudflare states that this service does not use cookies or fingerprinting to track individual visitors. It runs only when you visit the Website; the Extension never loads it, and visiting or not visiting the Website has no effect on how the Extension works.

09Data Security

Everything AskBetter stores stays in your browser's extension storage, and text leaves your browser only in the provider requests described in section 04, sent over HTTPS. Reasonable safeguards are used, but no system can guarantee absolute security. Anyone with access to your browser profile can read extension storage, so use a profile you control.

10Children's Privacy

AskBetter does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children.

11License and Usage Terms

AskBetter source code is publicly viewable but is not open source under any OSI-approved license. The following apply:

• Permitted: view source, install and use the official release for personal non-commercial purposes, contribute via pull requests to the official repository.
• Prohibited: copying or redistributing source code, creating and distributing derivative works, repackaging or republishing to any store or marketplace, sublicensing, selling, renting, or commercially exploiting the software or any derivative of it.

Commercial use, redistribution, and modification for distribution are not permitted without explicit written permission from the copyright holder.

12AI Output Disclaimer

Outputs generated via AskBetter may be inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading. Do not rely on outputs for legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice. You are responsible for verifying outputs before use.

13No Warranty

AskBetter is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to fitness for a particular purpose, reliability, accuracy, or availability.

14Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the developer shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages, including loss of data, loss of profits, business interruption, or reputational harm, arising out of or related to the use of or inability to use AskBetter.

15User Responsibility

You are solely responsible for how you use AskBetter, including any prompts, outputs, decisions made based on outputs, and any third-party services you connect or interact with.

16Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the developer from any claims, damages, liabilities, losses, and expenses (including legal fees) arising out of or related to:

• Your use or misuse of the Extension
• Your violation of any laws or third-party rights
• Your use of third-party AI providers or services

17Changes to This Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Continued use of AskBetter after updates indicates acceptance of the revised policy.
